CHERRIES duo Nathan Ake and Asmir Begovic both missed out in their respective bids to reach the World Cup finals next summer.

Defender Ake played the full 90 minutes for the Netherlands during their 2-0 victory over Sweden at the Amsterdam Arena.

But the Dutch needed to overcome their Group A qualifying rivals by seven goals to book a play-off spot.

They finished third in the group, behind Sweden on goal difference.

Both goals for Ake’s side on the night came through winger Arjen Robben, who announced his international retirement following the game.

Bosnian stopper Begovic also needed results to go his way heading into the final fixtures in Group H.

While the Cherries keeper featured throughout his side’s 2-1 victory in Estonia, the 30-year-old saw his side finish third and miss out on a play-off place.

Second-place Greece booked their spot in the play-offs with a 4-0 win over Gibraltar – denying Bosnia the chance to reach Russia 2018 in the process.
