AN ELDERLY woman has died after she was involved in a crash with a reversing car on Friday morning.

The 84-year-old was taken to Poole Hospital with serious injuries after the collision in Sarum Avenue, West Moors, but died later that night.

The crash occurred at around 10am on Friday morning.

Her family is being supported by specialist officers from the Roads Policing Team.

The community in West Moors was in a state of shock over the weekend.

Neighbours say the road is a close community where everyone knows each other.

On Saturday, friend Hazel Fry who lives opposite where the collision occurred, said: “We were here but we didn’t see anything because we were getting ready to go out.

“It was very, very sad. We were all very upset because it is such a close knit community. It was such a shock and a shame.

“She was actually delivering a card to the wife of the man who hit her. It is her birthday and they are very close friends.

“She is such a lovely lady, she lost her husband a few years back.

“We are all very close round here. We all care for one and other and we look for one and other.”

“We have been here nearly 18 years - you couldn’t live in a nicer environment than this.”

The victim, who has yet to be named by police, was reportedly unsteady on her feet and used a walker to get around.

Mrs Fry said she thought she may have chosen to walk in the road as it was a more even surface than the pavement.

The driver of the vehicle involved was interviewed by police and an investigation into the circumstances of the collision is under way.

Police Sergeant Craig Tatton, of the traffic unit, said: “This is a fairly quiet residential area and we have made a number of house-to-house enquiries to find out what exactly happened.

“However, if anyone who has not spoken with officers yet has witnessed the collision, please contact us as soon as possible.”
