BOURNEMOUTH University will be holding a variety of events to recognise World Mental Health Day including a talk from former World Heavyweight Champion boxer Frank Bruno.

World Mental Health Day takes place on Tuesday and focuses on the education, awareness and importance of mental health.

Between Monday and Thursday, the university is hosting a variety of public events to mark World Mental Health Day.

A range of external speakers will give both their personal and professional views on mental health, including Natasha Devon who has a decade of experience working in more than 200 schools, delivering talks and conducting research on mental health.

Natasha was named one of the 500 most influential people in Britain and in 2015 was awarded an MBE for her services to young people. Natasha will be speaking on “Three Teachable Skills for Good Mental Health” which will take place at the Executive Business Centre from 3-4pm on Wednesday.

Frank Bruno MBE will also be speaking on “Fighting the Stigma” where he will talk about his own experience of living with bipolar disorder and how his charity work is being used to fight the stigma of mental health in today’s society.

There will also be “Time of Your Life” performances by Caravan Theatre throughout the afternoon on Tuesday Wednesday, which follows character Alex as he battles mental health stigma whilst also trying to identify his own mental illness.

Equality and Diversity Adviser at BU, Dr James Palfreman-Kay, said: “I am really pleased to see how BU has worked together with a number of partners to put on a range of events to mark World Mental Health Day 2017.”
