STUDENTS at a Poole school got a chance to put their old uniforms to good use last week.

Broadstone Middle School, in Dunyeats Road, has had a new uniform and logo made, its first update in a decade, and on Friday pupils packaged their old gear up to be sent to Africa, where many youngsters lack school clothes.

Assistant Head Teacher Rachel Milton said: "We wanted a fresh start and our new uniforms look so smart, we have had a lot of people writing to us positively.

"Natalie Stansby from our parent association the Social Hub said she knew someone who could ensure the old uniforms were recycled and sent away to places like Malawi and Zambia."

The National Police Aid Convoy, a charity formed of retired police officers, collected the gear and will distribute it.

"It is good for our children to see they are not just being thrown away, they had a special assembly to tell them where the uniforms are going and where they will be put to good use."
