MORE than 80 locations in Bournemouth need better road safety measures but the council can't afford to install them.

The shocking figure was revealed when a member of the public asked for traffic calming measures following a crash near his home in Queens Park Avenue.

Road safety manager Richard Pearson explained that the road has not had seven or more casualty accidents in the last five years and therefore does not qualify.

And he told the concerned member of the public: "There are more than 80 locations around the borough where there is a significant casualty accident record over the last five years (seven or more casualty accidents) and current levels of funding will only allow us to treat a small number of these locations each year."

The resident, who does not wish to be named, said: "I appreciate that we live in a time of ever shrinking local authority budgets. But this issue could result in the deaths of innocent people.

"There are 80 locations that need attention and only a small number can be resolved each year, so essentially it could take over 20 years to stop people dying on our roads, yet the council can find the funding to create infrastructure that will increase traffic in the area and exacerbate the problems in the 80 areas."

The Daily Echo has now obtained a list of the sites and is publishing it today.

Cllr Mike Greene, Cabinet Member responsible for Transport, said: "Despite a reduction in government funding we continue to invest around £600,000 per year specifically on various engineering and educational road safety projects to physically improve safety, and educate the public on road safety matters.

"We continue to work closely with the Dorset Road Safety Partnership to monitor reportable road collisions and casualties with an aim to target where road safety initiatives and improvements will most effectively reduce casualties.

"We are committed to reducing the number of collisions and casualties on Bournemouth’s roads and we are continuing to see a downward trend in the statistics. "

Cllr Greene said the council supports the Dorset Police No Excuse and community speed watch initiatives.
