A DORSET baker is preparing to create the world’s largest Victoria sponge cake.

Steven Oxford from Oxford’s Bakery near Sherborne, Dorset is hoping to make his mark on the Guinness Book of World Records.

The Victoria Sponge will be 5ft wide and 1ft deep, using more than 700 individually cracked eggs, 50kg of butter and costing in the region of £6,000.

The 690lb cake will be revealed in all its glory at the Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival at 3pm this Sunday.

Currently there is no official record for the world’s largest Victoria Sponge, aiding Steven’s confidence in achieving the record.

Steven Oxford, from Oxford’s Bakery, told the Echo: “I’m pretty sure we will be able to get the record, we are already half way through making the sponge.

“Strangely I’ve actually made one [a Victoria Sponge cake] this large before, I did it for a laugh.

“After realising I made the biggest Victoria Sponge in the world I decided to contact Guinness World Records.

“The cake will actually double up as my son’s third birthday cake.”

The cake will be presented and filmed for documentation this Sunday.

Steven told the Echo that the Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival will be the “best place” for the big unveil.
