PLANE crazy charity fundraisers aren't letting a baking hot bank holiday Monday put them off a formidable challenge today.

The ninth annual Dorset Plane Pull will see a total of 18 teams haul a 35,000kg Boeing 737 a distance of 50 metres to raise money for good causes.

Volunteers are raising money for a wide range of charities with their efforts, including the Wessex Cancer Trust, the John Thornton Young Achiever's Foundation and the Isabel Baker Foundation.

Kyrie Feltham, one of a team of four behind the plane pull, said: "We always spend weeks worrying about the weather, asking ourselves if rain will ruin it.

"This year, it's absolutely roasting. Everyone's having a great time though, there's absolutely loads of people here."

Over the years, participants have raised more than £100,000 for charity.

Kyrie said: "Next year will be our 10th plane pull, and we'd really love to get to £150,000.

"I hope we'll make it. Every year it just gets bigger and bigger.

"We never thought it would turn into something like this.

"My mum was ill with motor neurone disease the first year, and that's why we did it. She passed away the following year.

"Since then, we've gone from a couple of teams to almost 20.

"We do all of it for charity.

"We're very proud of it all."

Natalie Varney, of team Aim Altitude, said: "We're doing it today for the Wessex Cancer Trust.

"It's an absolutely great charity and it's a cause that's close to everyone's heart.

"The company makes cabin interiors for 737 planes, and that's what we'll be pulling along today."

Team Al of a Pull have claimed the prize for 'fastest pull' for the past four years.

Matt Lee said: "We always do it for Julia's House because they helped my brother in his childhood.

"We always try to raise as much as we can for such a good charity."

Lindsay Wallace, an intern events coordinator for the hospice, said: "It's been a really good day.

"It's always a big event for us."

The event, hosted by European Skybus, also features stalls, a bar, live music and a raffle.
