DORSET star Georgia hall was powerless to stop America sweeping the board during the afternoon fourballs on the opening day of the Solheim Cup.

The 21-year-old, who had secured a point for her side in the morning foursomes alongside Anna Nordqvist, was beaten 2&1 partnering Charley Hull against the US pairing of Stacy Lewis and Gerina Piller in the final match of the day at the Des Moines Golf & Country Club.

Having halved the opening five holes, birdies from Piller at the sixth and Lewis at the seventh put the American duo two up.

Wimborne-based Hall responded with a birdie of her own at the eighth to reduce the deficit but the home pair continued to hold the lead heading into the back nine.

And with Lewis recording a birdie two at the par three 17th, the contest was over as Hall suffered her first loss as a Solheim Cup player.

The result also helped America sweep the board in the afternoon session. They claimed all four points to lead 5½-2½ after day one.

Hall is set to partner Nordqvist again in the morning foursomes today and will have her chance to gain some revenge against Lewis and Piller, who they take on in match number three.
