HE has been described as a mix between Gregory Porter and Michael Kiwanuka; yes, there’s a lot of soul and a touch of folk to the songs of Myles Sanko, who you can catch at Canvas Bournemouth on September 1.

He is championed by the likes of Craig Charles and has recently toured with his hero Porter in Germany.

Only 200 tickets are available for next month's intimate gig, which true soul afficiandos will adore. The former frontman went it alone last year with the release of Just Being Me, an album lauded by the soul-jazz press. But there is also a touch of folk, as mentioned, hip-hop and swing in his melodies. So, seriously groovy.

Sanko moved from Ghana to the UK in his teens, sampling an eclectic selection of sounds along the way.

He recently said: “Growing up in Ghana was very magical and humbling at the same time, with every movement in life having its own rhythm. I was surrounded by all types of music: Traditional Ghanaian music, reggae, funk and a lot of soul. My mother’s side of the family were very musically talented and I believe that’s where my love for music came from.”

Frustrated by the late 1990s ‘gangster thing’ he started to run his own club nights before taking to the stage himself. The band formed organically out of those club nights and his mission – to make soul cool again and not something ‘Grandad listens to’ – drove him forward musically, while everything from love to politics inspires his distinctive lyrics.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to catch him live in Bournemouth.
