A man seriously injured in a collision in Christchurch remains in a life-threatening condition.

The pedestrian, who is a Christchurch man in his 50s, sustained serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.

A silver BMW 5 Series travelling from the Fountain roundabout toward Bournemouth was in collision with the man who was crossing the road.

The driver of the BMW was not injured.

The emergency services were called to Barrack Road at around 3.10pm on Thursday.

The crash happened outside the police station.

The A35 Barrack Road was closed both ways following the crash.

The road was closed for over four hours between Stour Road traffic lights and Fountain roundabout.

It was shut until around 7.40pm while specially trained collision investigators examine the scene.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and anyone with dash cam footage to come forward.

Police Constable Angus Wilson, of the Serious Collisions Investigation Team, said: “We have already spoken to a number of people who were in the area at the time.

"I am appealing to anyone else who witnessed the collision and has yet to speak to officers to please contact Dorset Police.

“I am particularly keen to hear from any motorists who were travelling in the area at the time and may have caught the incident on dashcam.

"I would like to thank motorists for their patience during the road closures."

A diversion was in place while the road was shut, but there was major congestion westbound along the bypass, with Hurn Road, Fairmile Road, Bargates, Purewell, Bridge Street, Stour Road, and Sopers Lane all suffering severe delays.

Parley Lane has also been solid eastbound onto Christchurch Road, Hurn Road, Fairmile Road, and Bargates.

The Avon Causeway was slow eastbound.

Jeremy Clarke, of Belvoir Lettings in Bargates, saw the air ambulance land at the scene.

“There were 11 blue lights with ambulances and police cars,” he said.

“It didn’t look very nice. For them to close the road for that long, I knew it must be serious.”

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I didn't see the accident but there are queues in all directions."
