THEY have been described as reinventing the brass band sound for the modern age.

Formed in 2008 out of a desire to play music that appealed to the feet as much as to the ears, the Hackney Colliery Band rapidly gained an army of loyal supporters.

The nine-piece is one of the latest acts to be confirmed for Bestival which will move from the Isle of Wight to Lulworth Castle this year, from September 7 to September 10.

With a setlist as diverse as the borough which gave them their name, audiences can expect an eclectic mix of dancefloor-filling contemporary rock, jazz, soul and electronica.

Since the release of their eponymous debut in 2011, the Hackney Colliery Band have become known for their energetic and passionate live shows, amassing fans worldwide and reinventing the brass band sound for the 21st century.

Not only do they play trumpets, trombones, saxophones and sousaphone but also percussion adding drum machines and electronica.

Their new album, Sharpener, which was released last month, is described as “a tour de force.”

Other acts confirmed for Bestival 2017 include The XX who will be the first ever headliners on the main Castle Stage, with hip-hop “heroes”, A Tribe Called Quest, playing their last ever UK show to headline on the Saturday. Electronic duo Pet Shop Boys will wrap up the proceedings on Sunday.

Their new he band are as inspired by contemporary rock and electronica as they are New Orleans marching bands and the traditional British brass bands to which their name pays homage.

Singer Jamie T will be headlining the second stage, The Box, on Thursday night.

Other acts set for the Castle Stage include Justice, Dizzee Rascal, and Soul II Soul. There will also be DJ sets from Annie Mac and Andy C.

Organisers have said Bestival 2017 is a “whole new world” to explore.
