This charming film of Bournemouth town centre from 1961 has been unearthed.

The video, called Enchanting Bournemouth, shows the roundabout which has now become the Square, Richmond Hill and the trolley buses that once ferried passengers around.

The narrator describes Bournemouth as a “marvellous shopping centre where you’ll find large up-to-the-minute shops and the latest in fashions.”

Henlys motor agents, which is now home to New Look, and Dolcis shoe shop can also be seen in the background, as well as Westover Road and Bournemouth Arcade.

A large seating area near Pier Approach can also be seen briefly, as well as Bournemouth Pier and what appears to be a paddle steamer alongside it.

The video was posted on the British Film Institute’s Facebook page courtesy of the Wessex Film and Sound Archive.

It has so far had 38,000 views and 390 shares.
