A MAJOR scheme to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists near Poole town centre has been given the go-ahead.

The £200,000 proposals would see improved cycling and walking facilities between Pitwines and the High Street.

Work would include widened footways in the section of Lagland Street between the High Street and Newfoundland Drive and an upgraded bus stop and shelter in Lagland Street outside The Lord Wimborne pub.

The roundabout at The Foundry Arms, which links Newfoundland Drive and Langland Street, will be reduced in size to make it feel "more like a neighbourhood area".

And the island just before the roundabout in Newfoundland Drive will be removed and replaced with a zebra crossing, which will provide a pedestrian link between Green Road and the High Street.

The scheme will also see the highways and footways in the area resurfaced and also a new shared cycleway/footway between Pitwines Close and Lagland Street for less confident cyclists.

It's estimated that the scheme will cost £209,000. Borough of Poole has approved funding of £80,000 from its structural maintenance programme to cover the cost of highway repairs in the area.

The remaining £129,000 will be covered by developers' contributions owed to the council from budget supermarket Aldi, which opened a store in Pitwines Close.

Although the scheme was generally met with positive reactions from members of the public, there were some concerns raised about the shared cycleway and pedestrian footpath.

One resident said: "As a cyclist and a pedestrian I find it difficult and potentially hazardous to mix pedestrians and cyclists on the same path, unless there are clear signs indicating mixed usage.

"Complete segregation is the best but I appreciate on this project that would not be possible. Clear signage please."

On Thursday (July27) Cllr Ian Potter, cabinet member for planning, regeneration and transportation, approved the scheme.

It will now move into the detailed design stage with work expected to start from September this year and completed during November ready for the busy Christmas period in the town centre.
