BINS at Christchurch Quay have been replaced in a bid to reduce the litter left at the beauty spot.

The current bins will make way for 140 and 240 litre dual use wheelie bins.

The new containers have been successfully trialled at other sites in the borough, and will provide 70 per cent more "waste capacity", claim Christchurch council.

Matt Reeks, community and open spaces manager for Christchurch and East Dorset Councils said: “Many of the current litter and dog waste bins on the quay are in a poor condition and need replacing.

"I’m pleased that 11 new dual purpose bins will be put in place before the school holidays begin.

"The new larger bins have animal proof lids, which cannot be left open. This should have a positive impact on keeping Christchurch Quay, the splash park and play park clear of litter.

"Christchurch Quay is a beautiful open space which is enjoyed by both residents and visitors, and is especially busy during the summer months.

"We hope that the public continue to take care of Christchurch Quay by using these new bins responsibly."

From July to September the bins at Christchurch Quay will be emptied twice daily.

Last year, the council removed all the bins at Christchurch Quay, asking people to take their litter home with them.

It attracted opposition from residents and community groups who claimed the controversial move would lead to more littering.
