SWANAGE lifeboat rescued two people after their 37ft yacht suffered engine failure.

Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the all-weather lifeboat at around 7.40pm on Sunday.

The yacht, which was on passage from Cherbourg to the Solent, had suffered engine failure approximately eight miles south-east of Swanage.

The lifeboat was on scene within 30 minutes.

A spokesperson for the RNLI said: "A crewman was transferred to the yacht and a tow secured, and because of the strong flood tide it was decided to take the casualty to Yarmouth."

Yarmouth lifeboat was called out to take over the tow once the Swanage crew reached Alum Bay.

On their return to station, they were asked by the coastguard to keep a lookout for an eight-metre yacht, which had not been heard of since leaving Weymouth at 8.45am that morning.

The spokesperson said: "The ALB checked out several targets in Christchurch and Studland Bay but nothing was found. As the ALB was about to search vessels moored in Swanage Bay, Solent CG reported that the missing vessel had been located at Lymington. Swanage ALB was then released to return to station and was rehoused at 10.55pm."
