Heard of a freakshake?

Well, they're a popular 'weird food' trend - and they're not for the faint-hearted.

They're aimed at those with a sweet tooth (a VERY sweet tooth) and the ability to eat an enormous amount of ice cream - and there are lots of place in Bournemouth where you can get them.

Typically topped with biscuits, cookie dough or chocolate bars, the giant milkshakes, also known as monster shakes, are set to be a massive hit this summer.

1) Monty's Lounge

Perhaps the Godfather of the monster shake, Monty's - which is based in Pokesdown and Bourne Avenue, Bournemouth - have developed a reputation for their creations. With a staple menu of four, customers can choose from the Uh-Oh-Oreo, The Bee's Knees, Eton Mess and Somewhere It's After Eight.

According to Christian Schneider from Monty's the Uh Oh Oreo is their best seller, made from Kinder Bueno, Oreo, peanut butter, Nutella and four scoops of vanilla ice cream.

2) Shakeaway in Post Office Road.

The original and many say the best. Not technically termed as 'freakshakes', these are still a must-have for people visiting Bournemouth. The "original re-inventor of milkshake", Shakeaway are famed for their massive menu and abundance of flavours, with a large array of toppings.

3) Creams in Charminster Road.

Judging by some of the pictures Creams show of their freakshakes, these are not for the weak-willed. With a different shake for each season, the chances of a sugar rush with one of these are pretty high.

4) Harvester

Not perhaps the most likely of places for this niche dessert, Harvester have branched out and produced their own menu of three shakes for diners. Options include Cloud 9, Cookie Monster and Sweet Shop, which include marshmallows, waffles, brownies and Skittles - as well as a mountain of ice cream.

5) The Brasshouse and O'Neill's

Yes, The Brasshouse and O'Neills on Old Christchurch Road do freakshakes. A selection of three including Chocolate Meltdown, Honeycomb Explosion and Strawberry Fields which is topped with candy floss.

And they're pretty reasonably priced as well.

6) Gallones

Found in Gervis Place, Bournemouth, Gallones say they are supersizing their summer offerings, including their monster shakes. With a massive array of ice creams and the chance to host ice cream parties, we're sure they will be very popular this summer.

7) Five Guys, BH2

Want bacon in your milkshake? Well, Five Guys is where to go.

They start with their creamy vanilla base, and then you have the choice of 11 mix ins plus the chance to crumble in some bacon. YUM (or not). It's probably worth a try though.
