A VILLAGE pre-school in Purbeck faces closure unless at least a dozen more children enrol for September.

Trustees at St Georges Pre-School, Langton Matravers, say they've reached the "sad decision" that because of falling numbers they cannot afford to keep running after the end of this term.

Mary Sparks, chairman of the trustees, explained: "The decision is in no way a reflection of the excellent work done by pre-school staff, nor the wonderful support provided by parents and friends.

"We have explored all possible avenues and have taken advice from Early Years advisors, but it seems clear that unless we get at least twelve more children on roll for September, there is no way to balance the books in the future."

Parent and St Georges pre-school supporter Ali Burnett believes the school is in this position, in part, because of a significant lack of affordable housing in the catchment area, making it a struggle for young families to live locally.

"The pre-school is therefore relying on the support of the wider community and promoting what sets them apart from other pre-schools."

A decision on the future of the pre-school, which is affiliated to St George's Church of England Primary School, will be made on July 11, so supporters are urging parents to act quickly.

Ali wants parents to utilise the government funded hours - either 15 hours for three to four year olds, or 30 hours for working parents of three to four year olds.

"You can also split this funding over several different childcare providers and your child can enjoy everything St George’s has to offer in addition to the services provided in their current setting," she said.

"In Purbeck, we are all too familiar with seeing our village communities gradually disappearing.

"Please let's not let Langton be the next. Please call today, come and visit Ruth, Pam and all the staff, bring your child, see the fantastic environment, feed the chickens, play outside, sing a song, get the paints out. Please sign up and use St George’s Pre-School."
