AN INMATE who threw a bottle of urine and excrement at two prison officers has been jailed for a further four months.

Joshua Richards, who was already serving a seven-year prison sentence for grievous bodily harm and affray, has now been convicted at Weymouth Magistrates' Court of 'potting' assaults.

The term is given to offences involving inmates throwing bodily substances over prison staff.

Richards, 25, committed the offences at HMP Guys Marsh on Monday, August 15.

He had been relocated to the Saxon Wing of the jail due to his disruptive behaviour elsewhere in the prison.

At around 6.40pm, an officer walking along the ground floor landing stopped to speak to a colleague who was halfway up the stairs to the first floor.

One of the officers then spotted Richards on the first floor landing holding a bottle.

The defendant threw the contents of the bottle on both of the offices.

Richards was sentenced to a further four months in prison after being found guilty of the assaults.

He will serve the sentence consecutive to his current jail term.

Inspector Tony Burden, of Dorset Police, said: “This was a particularly unpleasant incident for the staff involved, who were simply trying to do their job in what can be difficult circumstances.

“They both showed great courage in attending court to give evidence and help to secure the conviction of Richards.

“Dorset Police will always work closely with HM Prison Service to ensure that offenders such as Richards are brought to justice.”
