RESIDENTS have been given a chance to have their say on plans for a new retirement housing scheme in Poole.

Developers McCarthy and Stone is proposing to build 37 new apartments for older people at 1-5 Lindsay Road.

The development, which will be made up of one and two-bedroom flats, are still at a preliminary stage and there has been no planning application submitted to Borough of Poole.

Although the outline proposal includes landscaped gardens and on-site car parking spaces.

But so far little detail is known about the layout and scale of the development - other than it will be built over three plots in Lindsay Road.

A public exhibition was held at St Aldhelm's Church on Wednesday for residents to view the proposals and give comments.

It marked the beginning of the pre-application community consultation stage.

A statement from McCarthy and Stone said: "The redevelopment of the site offers an important opportunity to provide much needed specialist retirement accommodation, increasing the housing choice for local older people.

"The Office of National Statistics predicts that the local over-65s population will rise by 55 per cent over the next 20 years. The redevelopment of this site will also contribute to Poole Borough Council’s identified housing need, and meets aspirations for brownfield development to deliver future growth in Poole."

Shane Paull, Regional Managing Director at McCarthy and Stone, said: “We want to hear from the local community and our future homeowners before we finalise our planning application.

“Our plans provide an important opportunity to deliver a sensitive residential development in an attractive location, and we have sought to respect the characteristics of the local Conservation Area when developing our design and landscaping proposals.

"This scheme would significantly improve the housing choices for older people in Poole, while also providing a boost for local businesses through increased year-round spending in the area.”
