A LORRY driver was left a little embarrassed after he wedged his truck into a petrol station, severely damaging the roof.

The Shell garage at Waterloo Road in Poole, close to Darbys Corner, was closed after a Reliance Scrap Metal lorry crashed into the forecourt roof on Monday.

The fuel station reopened late on Monday night.

Large corrugated white ceiling tiles were at risk of falling from the canopy after they were dislodged during the incident, which happened shortly after 10am.

The Shell logo had been destroyed and other debris was left at the petrol pumps after the collision.

The driver of the truck, who did not wish to be identified, told the Daily Echo that it was a “complete accident” and he was just glad nobody had been injured in the crash.

“The staff here have been really great,” he said.

Tyler Duggan was buying food from the deli2go when he witnessed the incident.

He said: “There was this almighty boom and crash. He’d pulled in wedging himself under the roof. He managed to bring the roof panels down.

“They missed a lady filling up her car by inches.”

A spokesman for the company said that a structural engineer would need to be called out and that the garage would remain closed completely until it was deemed safe to reopen.

An employee working at the deli at the time said she was alerted just seconds before it happened after she overheard another lorry driver say ‘he’s not going to make it’.

“I looked over and then there was this huge crash,” she said.

“The next second I was shaking and crying. It’s just lucky that nobody was hurt.”

A spokesman for Reliance Scrap Metal said: “Our main concern is that nobody was hurt. Representatives have been at the garage and a full investigation has started. We take this incredibly seriously and the lorry will not be moved until the investigation is concluded.”

On Friday, a man became trapped inside the garage’s cashpoint as he tried to refill it. Firefighters freed the man after they were called at 10.32am.

The worker was inside the machine for nearly an hour as the crew sought to rescue him from the machine.
