THE prime minister must "reinvest" in the police to combat terrorism, Dorset's police and crime commissioner says.

Martyn Underhill said rural forces are unlikely to be able to respond to a terrorist incident as effectively as police in London and Manchester.

He also called once again for all frontline officers to have the opportunity for Taser training.

"The actions of Theresa May when she was home secretary are all coming home to roost," he said.

"The totality of policing, from neighbourhood policing teams to major crime, need urgent reinvestment and support from government."

As reported in the Daily Echo, Mr Underhill has called for a "thorough review" into the current counter-terrorism strategy after recent terror attacks.

"The chief constable and I are examining the option and cost of offering Taser to every police officer who requests one and who successfully passes the training," he said.

Dorset Police began a review of the number of officers trained to carry a Taser last year.
