A FRIENDSHIP group which provides cooked meals for elderly people has celebrated its golden anniversary 50 years to the day since it first opened.

The Iford Friendship Centre is based within the Iford United Reformed Church in Ropley Road, Bournemouth and currently has around 50 members.

Every Wednesday they meet for a three-course lunch, coffee and a chat and members celebrated the anniversary with entertainment from a singer and a special birthday cake.

The centre is run by a small group of volunteers, under the chairmanship of church secretary Brenda McCanon.

She said: "The majority of members live alone and appreciate not only the meal but also the companionship of getting out and meeting others in the same situation as themselves.

"The meal is cooked, served and cleared by volunteer helpers from the local churches. We feel the centre provides a very useful service in our local community."
