IT’S one of the biggest events on the charity calendar when Bournemouth is transformed into a sea of pink.

For more than 15 years women and girls across the region have laced up their trainers – united in the fight against cancer.

And this year will be no exception as more than 1,600 ladies rally once again to take part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, raise thousands of pounds and help beat cancer sooner.

There’s just a few days left to sign up and grab a place in this Sunday’s 5k and 10k events which organisers hope will bring in more than £130,000.

And they are pinning their hopes on a last minute surge of willing participants – mums, daughters, sisters and friends - for the life-saving fundraiser taking place on the seafront at Pier Approach.

Georgina Horne, event manager for Race for Life in Bournemouth, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that 1,600 women have entered Race for Life on the seafront this year. But we still need more women to come forward, sign up and help beat cancer sooner. So we’re urging anyone who has been thinking about taking part to join the fight and sign up today.

“Everyone is welcome and it’s still not too late to enter. This is a call-out to remind the women of Bournemouth and the surrounding area just how important their participation and contribution is.

“One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. Research is very expensive and the only way we can afford to fund it is with the help of our supporters. Money raised through Race for Life - whether it’s £10 or £100 - will help Cancer Research UK scientists find new ways to treat cancer and save more lives.”

More willing volunteers are also needed to help make sure the event – now in its 16th year in the city - runs smoothly with a number of roles to fulfil on the day, from supporting participants on as they run, walk or jog the course to handing out medals on the finish line.

Sunday’s Race for Life will begin at 11am prompt but there will be plenty happening in front of the stage from 10am.

The event is being supported by Dorset solicitors firm Coles Miller who have more than 20 members of staff taking part by either running or forming the Coles Miller Cheer Squad on the day.
