TWO of the conurbation's busiest roads have been named in a top ten of most dangerous roads for motorcyclists in the south west.

Bournemouth's A3049 Wallisdown Road and Poole's B3068 Ringwood Road have been ranked third and fourth, respectively, in the study.

The research, commissioned by Swinton Insurance, was based on 2016 data on individual accidents in specific locations, which were then aggregated using road names.

It highlights the roads most likely for bikers to experience accidents, not the roads where the most serious accidents occurred.

The study also found there are 13 motorbike accidents per 100,000 people in the south west.

Rodney Kumar, of leading road safety charity IAM RoadSmart, said: "We often find that while drivers and motorcyclists strive to be as safe as possible, some find it a challenge to understand exactly how to do so.

"And as time passes after our driving tests, some of the simple tips we learnt to help stay safe can fad into the background.

"That is why it is so important to offer useful and easily digestible information on how to be a safe biker."

The research also highlights 85 per cent of motorbike accidents in the region occurred in fine weather, and that the majority of crashes affected riders less than 25 years old.

The study also concluded that Wednesday was the most common day for motorbike crashes in the south west.

Swinton Insurance's Dan Agate said: "Motorcycle safety should always be front of mind for any rider, but awareness events like the UN Global Safety Week are great reminders of just how imperative it is to do what we really can to stay safe in the road.

"And talking about it now to rider in the south west, during the summer months, is really important. We hope our interactive map and guides help people to think more about safety with every journey they make, come rain or shine."
