MORE than 1,200 students will take part in a countywide sports event this month.

Bryanston School near Blandford will be hosting the Dorset Summer School Games Finals 2017 on Wednesday, June 28.

Students will participate in a range of competitions, including cricket, equestrian, and rounders.

Organised by Active Dorset in partnership with local authorities, School Games organisers, and national governing bodies of sport, the day will begin with an opening ceremony, which will feature a motivational speech from London 2012 Olympian John Pearce.

John was originally selected into handball through the UK Sport Talent Identification system, where he was one of twelve from the programme to make it the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Martin Kimberley, Active Dorset chief executive, said: “It’s great to see the range of opportunities for students in Dorset as the County School Games continue to grow, and 2017 will be the largest event yet.

“Very well done to everyone who has made it to the games and I hope you all have a successful, enjoyable and memorable day.”

The School Games is a fully inclusive competition for school children in England, designed to motivate, enthuse and inspire young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.
