CHECKOUT the new mayor of Poole. Lindsay Wilson is the 769th first citizen of the ancient borough.

And she wants to assure the residents that not all mayors are posh retirees living in Sandbanks.

"I'm a single mum of three who works on the tills at a supermarket," said Cllr Wilson.

"So the life of a mayor is probably not as glamorous as people imagine."

Cllr Wilson has served as a councillor on Borough of Poole for the last 13 years so she is no stranger to the workings of the borough, but this will be her first time as mayor after being elected as Sheriff last year.

But despite the new responsibility she is very clear about what she wants to achieve during her year as mayor - and that is to change the perception people have about the position.

"For some reason people seem to think that the mayor is a wealthy retiree living in a mansion in Sandbanks but that's just not me," said Cllr Wilson.

"Like most mums out there I juggle a job with my responsibilities at home to my kids and my grandchildren."

Her duties as mayor include chairing all meetings of the full council, overseeing citizenship ceremonies for people becoming British citizens in Poole, and representing residents as their ambassador at the many functions she will attend in her mayoral year.

But one of the hardest things mayor's face is being completely non-political - while also remaining a ward councillor.

"I'm sure it will be challenging some days, especially when it's a subject I'm really passionate about. But that's part of the job," added Cllr Wilson who says she just wants to be a good ambassador for Poole and promote the town during her time as mayor.

"We have so many great businesses in the town. Not just the big names like Lush and Sunseeker but also lots of hidden ones that I would really love to promote."

Each mayor gets to choose their own charities to support for the year they are in office and Cllr Wilson has chosen to back Forest Holme Hospice, Restored, a charity which supports people with eating disorders, and Crash Hedgehog Hospital.

"Forest Holme is close to my family's hearts as they provided my Grandmother with the best care and comfort in her time of need," added Cllr Wilson.

"But I also think it's important for the mayor to support some less well-known charities which is why I chose Restored as they do fantastic work locally and I'm a huge animal lover and Angela Squires who runs Crash is so dedicated in her mission to provide round the clock care for injured and sick hedgehogs."

Cllr Wilson has served the Newtown ward since 2015 as a Conservative, but was previously a Liberal Democrat councillor for the Alderney ward.
