SKIPPER Chris Park is backing his multi-faceted bowling attack to continue wreaking havoc as Bournemouth seek to extend their victorious start to the Southern Premier League season.

Teenage spinner Rob Pack, who is “mad keen” to impress this season according to Park, tore through Portsmouth with five wickets in the thumping 69-run win last week, having opened the campaign by snaring three victims in a 97-run trouncing of Rowledge.

On that occasion, it was Dom Clutterbuck who did most of the damage with a match-defining haul of five for 17.

With a rich fast-bowling armoury at his disposal, too, Park admits there is little room for sentiment in the outfield.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s Chapel Gate clash with winless Hook & Newnham Basics on Saturday (1pm), Park told the Daily Echo: “We are lucky to have seven or eight bowling options. If one of them is having an off day, or a bad spell, I have to be ruthless and make a change immediately.

“Rob Pack did not have a great pre-season, he had to miss three of the four friendlies because of work. Coming into the season, he has been mad keen to do well.

“But the wickets have been shared around. Dom Clutterbuck’s five-for changed the game against Rowledge, then he bought a wicket at Portsmouth as well.

“We are heavily dominated by our spin bowling and we still have Jem Warner to come back from Durham University.

“In club cricket, spin does dominate. A lot of batsmen’s eyes light up when they see the slow bowlers. But these three are good quality spinners, they have bowled a lot of overs through the years, so there is an awful lot of experience there, despite their ages.

“And we have a strong seam attack, as well. Chrystian Michalowski and Chris Bolton are missing at the moment. But Simon Woodruff and Matt Jones, the two opening bowlers, were absolutely superb at Portsmouth and probably won us the game.”

The only slight blot on Lions’ promising start to the Division One campaign has been their inability to put an imposing total on the board.

Park’s team did well to score 206 on a minefield at Portsmouth but the captain was disappointed with the 217 they set Rowledge for victory on the opening day.

“As a batting side, we want to get to 250,” said Park. “You will never play a perfect game but the lads have applied themselves exceptionally well, the intensity has been great and we have had two good results.

“Cricket is a simple game. If our batsmen score runs and the bowlers take wickets, we will win a lot of games. It is down to the top six or seven to score those runs.

“We bat very deeply but we can’t take things for granted. We have to be on the money in every game.”
