A WOMAN is fighting for her life after becoming trapped underneath a car in Poole.

Police and paramedics were called to Wimborne Road, close to the police station, shortly before 2.45pm yesterday.

The collision involved a black Renault Clio and a pedestrian – a woman aged in her 40s and from Bournemouth.

She sustained serious injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment. Her condition is described as life-threatening by Dorset Police. Her family have been informed.

The driver of the Clio, a 42-year-old woman from Bournemouth, was not injured.

Residents of Wimborne Road were shocked by the incident.

Danielle Evans was returning home just after the collision.

“It was horrible, the worst crash I’ve ever seen,” she said.

“People were gathering around to help. The police were already there closing the road, and paramedics arrived around 15 minutes later.

“My thoughts go out to the family of the pedestrian,” she added.

Thea Morris said police closed the road just as she was driving down it.

“There were at least three police cars there at that stage.

“I could see the little black car was mostly on the pavement. It looked to be facing the wrong direction as well,” she said.

Wimborne Road was shut for around four hours while emergency services dealt with the incident and collision investigators examined the scene.

Police Sergeant Nikki Burt, of the traffic unit, said: “I would ask anyone who witnessed the collision and has yet to speak to officers to please contact Dorset Police.”

The road was closed between the George Roundabout and Tatnam Road while the incident was dealt with.

Motorists were asked to seek alternative routes and there were reports of severe delays in the area, including in Longfleet Road. Fernside Road remained closed for engineering work.

Parents and carers trying to get to Poole High School were asked to use the B3093 at the junction with the A35.
