OPPOSITION councillors are calling on Borough of Poole to reopen two public conveniences following a Daily Echo campaign.

Members of the Poole People party are to put forward a motion at the full council meeting next month calling for the Baiter Park and Sandbanks toilets to be reopened.

They will also move that a review be held of the cabinet decision earlier this year to close numerous toilets around the town, including the above, as well as those at Branksome Park, Alexandra Park, Constitution Hill and Poole bus station.

Finally, the party wants planned demolitions of toilets postponed until the review is completed.

On Thursday the Echo began a campaign to have the toilets reopened, after receiving an unprecedented level of correspondence from residents furious about the policy.

“A lack of public toilets deters tourists and shoppers, damages the borough’s reputation and limits the ability of people with restricted mobility or certain health issues to live normal lives,” said Mark Howell, leader of Poole People and a town centre councillor.

“Once again the ill-considered actions of Poole’s Conservative administration have attracted national attention.

“Poole People and Lib Dem councillors opposed these toilet closures vigorously because of the detrimental effects that were bound to result.”

The party’s motion justifies the review “in the light of public opposition, evidence of the consequences of the loss of these amenities to visitors, shoppers and residents, and the negative publicity that the borough has been subject to”.

Since the Echo campaign was launched we have received dozens of calls, emails and messages of support from readers.

Two toilet blocks at Chapel Lane and Quay Visitors car park have already been demolished, back in March, and last month a planning application was submitted to rip down the block at Constitution Hill.

The council has said the closures are necessary due to budget pressures.

Of the town’s 30 toilets, 15 have been closed or earmarked for closure.
