THOUSANDS of people and their four-legged friends are expected to head to Highcliffe Castle for the second ever Petfest event.

The one-day event on Sunday, June 4, will see the castle grounds packed with pooches, with visitors enjoying a dog show, talks, competitions, and a petting zoo.

Over 2,000 visitors attended the inaugural Petfest, and organisers are hoping this year’s event will be bigger and better.

Due to the popularity of last year's event, organisers are asking people to park at the Cliffhanger or Friars Cliff car park due to limited parking space.

Visitors and their dogs will be able to browse 30 pet-related stalls and also enter some light-hearted dog competitions – last year's event saw one dog dress up as a badger.

Highcliffe Castle will be holding its own version of Crufts and crowing one pet its Dog of the Year.

People will also be able to have their picture taken while holding a bird of prey and enjoy watching various displays including an owl display.

There will also be face painting, candy floss and pyrography.

Plus experts will be on hand to answer questions at a series of seminars including tropical animal experts from Magnolia House of Christchurch and a hedgehog rescue centre.

Stephen Noble, events and weddings team leader, said: “After the success of last year’s Petfest we are really pleased the event is returning for a second year.

"People’s pets are a huge part of their everyday lives and this event gives us a chance to celebrate our pets and also learn more about other animals.

"Petfest is guaranteed to put a smile on your face so we look forward to welcoming everyone along for this fun-filled day out. If you didn’t make last year’s event, I would encourage you to come along.”

Entry to the event, which takes place between 10.30am and 4pm, costs £1. For further details, visit highcliffecastle.co.uk/events/petfest/.
