PLANS to convert a house into six flats go before councillors next week.

The applicant, Mr U Khan, is seeking permission to build an extension to 79 Lowther Road in Bournemouth, which will host a mixture of one and two bedroom flats, including a studio in the roof space.

The board has received 15 letters of objection from neighbours chiefly expressing concerns about the impact on traffic and parking.

Ward councillor Cheryl Johnson said the proposal was "overly dense" and would "not provide a high standard" of accommodation.

Bournemouth Civic Society has also objected, saying the scheme could set a precedent in the area for developers attempting to "degrade" garden sites.

However council officers have urged the scheme be approved, claiming in a report to the board that "the immediate area has a mixed character and therefore proposed flat conversion can be accommodated without serious detriment to amenity".

Also, the council's transport officer said there was sufficient parking in the area to cope with the additional units.
