YOUTH facilities in Ringwood are open to the public once again after the council reopened the cafe at The Place.

Though only a temporary measure, the council hopes it will support teenagers using Carvers Recreation Ground as well as families using the play park area.

The facility opened on Monday, April 10 and was initially due to remain open until April 21, from 10.30am-3pm each day.

Following a meeting of the policy and finance committee on April 20, the trial has been extended until the end of September.

In line with other youth provisions at Carvers, the cafe will be run by staff directly employed by and reporting to the town council.

The cafe has been closed for several months following a dispute between the former cafe manager Antony Lewis and the council.

Mr Lewis claimed that he was “coerced” into running the cafe at the £540,000 youth hub in October last year on a three-month rolling contract but was dismissed just seven days into the contract following a complaint from a member of staff.

Though Mr Lewis has been offered £150 and supporting documentation by the council to cover some of his costs by the council, the situation is yet to be resolved.

Interim town clerk Terry Simpson told the Daily Echo: “The council maintains their decision was right and they’re not prepared to make any further offer to him.”

He added: “We’re opening for the Easter period.

“We’re looking to see how well that week’s gone and if it does prove a success for the people using the play park and the skate park then we will discuss what happens long term.

“Prior to the trial period members were saying we need to open a cafe down there for the young people.

“If it all goes well they will want to continue it.”

Councillor Andy Briers, the chairman of the council’s recreation committee, said: “As the council becomes more involved with the provision of youth services and play facilities we must also provide better access to toilets and refreshments. The cafe will provide those facilities.

“In addition to providing hot and cold drinks and ice creams there will be a breakfast and lite bites/lunch menu which will include healthy eating options.”
