A BOSCOMBE councillor has praised the O2 Academy’s decision to breathalyse minors attending a concert tonight.

Anyone under the age of 18 whom the venue believes to have consumed alcohol will have to pass the breathalyser test to be admitted entry.

Anyone who fails or refuses to take the test will not be allowed entry and will not even be given a refund.

The policy has been put in place for tonight’s sold-out Stormzy show. The grime and hip hop artist is currently on tour following the release of his debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer, in February this year.

Ward councillor Jane Kelly said she was “pleased” about the O2 Academy’s breathalyser policy.

“It’s the first I’ve heard of the policy, but I think it’s really commendable of the O2 Academy.”

“I do think drinking too much is a problem so I think it’s a great idea they're breathalysing under age people.”

“You can have a great night without getting drunk, and it’s important to start that culture within young people – it’s not about preaching or being holier-than-thou, but you can have a good night without alcohol,” she added.

A post on the O2 Academy’s Facebook page on Monday warned people about the policy for tonight’s concert.

A spokesperson for Academy Music Group said the breathalyser policy was put in place at some of its venues “from time to time”, for shows which attracted a younger audience.

“There will be a large proportion of teenagers at Stormzy, and anyone under 18 who appears to have consumed alcohol will be breathalysed, and if they refuse or fail the test they won’t be allowed entry. We use this policy to protect all our customers.”

Steve Hoyland, divisional manager, added breathalysers had been used at a couple of shows in Bournemouth previously.

"A lot of shows are attracting this younger audience, and we have a duty of care and social responsibility to people under the age of 18. We have to send a message that we are a safe, responsible venue.

"The UK has a binge drinking problem, and teenagers drink as well. If we feel there is a high risk show or event, we have to do something about it."
