A SCHOOLBOY from Bournemouth has taken on a triathlon after being inspired by his dad.

Leo Riggs, nine, decided to swim, cycle and run marathon distances over the course of several weeks to raise funds for the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.

It comes after dad Matthew was accepted into this year's London Marathon run.

Leo, a keen athlete and Epiphany School student, has already smashed his £200 target, raising £345 so far.

He said: "I love triathlon and as dad is doing the London Marathon this year I thought I would try to swim a marathon, cycle a marathon and run a marathon in the 10 week run-up to the event.

"I've been inspired by athletes and think that sport and team work can have a really positive effect on young people."

Leo said he wanted to raise money for the trust as volunteers "help young people to be the best they can be".

Mum Helen Riggs said: “Leo has loved taking on his 'trimarathon challenge' so far.

"He is fast approaching the end of his mission and enjoying every minute as he racks up the miles, as well as raising money for a cause he cares about.

“We searched charities and Leo decided he really likes what the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust does for young people.

"He was fortunate enough to meet Dame Kelly and the Brownlee brothers a couple of years ago at a triathlon and it had a real impact, even at his young age.

"Leo is still smiling throughout his challenge and having won a few medals he is now even more motivated to finish."

Leo usually trains with the Poole Athletic Club and Swim Bournemouth.

At weekends, he participates in aquathlons, duathlons and triathlons.

Marie Robinson of the trust said: “We’re delighted that Leo has become one of our youngest fundraisers, as well as giving his time, energy and efforts to support us.

“As a charity, we appreciate the generosity and passion of individuals like Leo to help us continue our vital work."
