MUDEFORD Quay might not be getting a new watersports facility - as plans to build a new base are recommended for refusal.

ORA Events have applied to Christchurch council to demolish an unused slipway shed next to Highcliffe Sailing Club and build a replacement structure to run surfing and kayaking events.

But council officers say the proposed building is "visually intrusive" and would harm the character of Mudeford Quay, which is a heritage asset.

It would also be at high risk of flooding, their report to the committee suggests.

The existing shed used to provide slipway management, but is currently vacant and is showing signs of damage.

The slipway, which has also become weathered in places and covered with shingle, is surrounded by a number of redundant boat trailers, unused rope and other litter.

The applicants, who organise the New Forest Marathon, said in their application they aimed to use the site to create a “community-focused project that will bring benefits to the local authority, local residents and visitors of all ages to provide a range of low impact, professionally managed land and water based activities”.

The proposal also includes a new quay information point.

Two separate sheds would be joined to create one structure, providing an area for storing water sports equipment, changing facilities and an office/reception area.

There are 13 letters of objection to the plans, with concerns about the impact on the open views of the harbour.

Others said more people would place an extra burden on parking and toilets.

But there are also four letters of support saying the development would tidy up the "scruffy" part of the quay and praising the additional activities.

The application also says shingle areas would be raked and de-weeded and the existing ramp cleared of debris.

The planning meeting at Christchurch council will take place on April 20.
