AN OSCAR winner and a top Hollywood composer will come to Bournemouth for a festival celebrating the contribution of sound and music to the movies.

The Short Sounds Film Festival will take place this October at Pavilion Dance South West.

Glenn Freemantle, who worked on Slumdog Millionaire and won an Academy Award for Gravity, will chair the festival jury. He will be joined by Rupert Gregson-Williams, who has composed the score for the forthcoming Wonder Woman movie, and whose other credits include Legend of Tarzan, a succession of Adam Sandler movies and the TV series Veep and The Crown.

The festival was conceived by the team from White Lantern Film, who made last year’s Bournemouth-shot horror film K-Shop.

Dan Pringle, director of K-Shop, said: “When we were touring with K-Shop last year and went around Europe and did 20-odd festivals, we just came to the conclusion that there was a space for a festival in Bournemouth.

“We thought, why can’t Bournemouth have its own festival? We’ve got the setting, we’ve got the growing digital economy and creative industries – why couldn’t we do something which is a flagship for film?”

He and K-Shop producer Adam Merrifield came up with the idea of a festival celebrating sound and music.

“If we’re going to do it, we should come up with a unique concept and not just put a festival on for the hell of having a festival,” he said.

Short Sounds will run from October 12-15 as a fringe event to the Arts by the Sea Festival.

Film-makers will be encouraged to submit their short films for the competition.

Mr Pringle said there would be “interactive sound installations” for the public to enjoy around the venue.

And the organisers hope to have a film shown with the score performed live by a classical ensemble.

They hope the event will take off and that in future years it could include a range of feature films, with a major movie performed with a full orchestra supplying the score.

A crowdfunding campaign to support the festival is due to be launched soon.

White Lantern is also looking for a flagship sponsor for the event, which will be run in partnership with the MA course in sound design at Bournemouth University.
