BOURNEMOUTH council has revealed details of a £2 million project for Pier Approach.

The cash, a government grant, will be used to fund new "high quality granite paving" and landscaping on the western side to mirror that around the fountains to the east.

Also planned is "pre-formed" seating, more plants, public art and new bins - the latter of which may be sited underground to improve the area's appearance.

Council leader John Beesley said: "We are delighted to have been awarded this additional government funding towards the council’s 20-year Seafront Strategy.

"Improving the gateway from the gardens to the seafront is a key priority for the council and is another step towards creating a world-class resort.

"Pier Approach is a vital part of the seafront as it has been a destination for visitors to Bournemouth for over 150 years. It is the central point of the seven miles of seafront and the link between the town, the gardens and the beach.

"This investment will enable the council to progress with phase two of the Pier Approach transformation programme. "Once complete it will showcase the area and help to attract investment to fund the other projects identified in the strategy."

Work on the scheme is due to start in September, and the council expects it to be completed "in time for the 2018 summer season".

The cash for the scheme is from the government's Coastal Communities Fund, and is a division from a £5.6m lump sum awarded to the Dorset Coastal Community Team for 18 separate projects along the county's coast.

Phase One at Pier Approach saw the fountain installed, new lighting and paving and the tourist information centre for a total cost of £4m.
