A MUM-OF-THREE who made a desperate plea for a donor to save her family will host a fundraising event in aid of Kidney Research Charity.

As previously reported, Sonia Alves, 37, is in urgent need of a kidney and without a donor, faces a daily battle for survival.

The family fun day featuring afternoon tea, bouncy castle, crafts and a raffle takes place from 2pm until 5pm on April 29 at St Luke’s church hall, Winton.

Sonia said she hopes the event will raise awareness that more than 5,000 children and adults are currently waiting for a kidney donor in the UK.

But a huge shortage of donors means hundreds are dying every year before they get the transplant they need.

Sonia, who has been on the waiting list for a donor since May 2015 and her kidneys are now operating at just 12 per cent, said: “It’s a waiting game and that is the hardest thing. You lay in bed each night thinking the phone might ring. You never know when you are going to get that call.

“My youngest daughter says all the time ‘mummy can I not give you my kidney?’ and that breaks my heart.

“The reality is people die every day waiting for an organ donation. When you have children, you want to spend quality time with them and you want to grow old with them and share memories. I don’t know if I am going to be around.

“A donation would be absolutely life-changing. It would change everything. I get choked up thinking about what a difference it could make.”
