BUILDINGS at a top Christchurch secondary school will be demolished to make way for new classrooms, a library and common room.

Plans have been put forward for Twynham School in Sopers Lane, which could see two Horsa blocks and a temporary building demolished.

A new two-storey building would be built in its place.

The Horsa buildings, which date back to the 1940s, are still on site, as well as the timber framed temporary buildings.

A planning statement with the proposal said: "Many of these buildings are now in a poor condition and do not comply with modern regulations, are poorly insulated, not energy efficient and are expensive to heat."

The buildings include teaching rooms, offices, a sixth form common room and a small fitness suite.

The new building will be two blocks, linked by a central atrium, with classrooms on the first floor and a library and sixth form common room on the ground floor, but there will not be an increase in pupil or staff numbers.

It is hoped the work will be carried out between July this year and August 2018, for the rooms to be ready for the start of the September 2018 school year.

Christchurch council has raised no objection to the plans from Dorset County Council.
