A 400 metre stretch of beach at Highcliffe was cordoned off on Saturday afternoon after a potential bomb scare.
But the alarm was soon called off after it was found to be a piece of rubbish.
Dorset Police were called to the beach by the Coastguard after the unidentified object was discovered at 1.30pm.
The object was taken to Christchurch police station - where it was due to be collected by the local authority.
