JET skiers have been urged to steer clear of other water users after surfers said they fear "they are going to kill someone one day."

They said some jet skiers act "like total idiots" and said jet skis have been passing within a few metres of people in the sea near Bournemouth pier.

They stressed the vast majority of jet skiers are "totally fine" but said a small minority are putting others in danger.

A spokesman for Bournemouth council said bylaws governing the use of watercraft at Bournemouth beach only apply between April and October.

The bylaws state that personal watercraft such as jet skis and boats must not endanger other beach users if they are within 200m of the low water mark.

But surfers said the bylaws are difficult to enforce at any time of the year and the council admitted it has "little power to enforce restrictions outside of the bathing season."

Surfer David Wallis said the council needs to introduce restrictions all year round.

"The council needs to accept that people go in the water in the winter. There are always swimmers, kayakers, paddleboarders and surfers in the sea.

"They need to consider a speed limit or distance restrictions, particularly around the piers.

"Most jet skiers, particularly the ones on the stand-up jet skis, are responsible and cause no problems but there are a few who are dangerous. They are going to kill someone one day."

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency said: "The majority of jet ski users are responsible, but in the past we have received complaints that jet skis have gone too fast and too close to shore. This is a concern to us as it's putting swimmers and other beachgoers in danger."
