A CAFÉ built from a renovated shipping freight container, mural artwork and improved lighting have all helped to transform a major roundabout in Bournemouth.

A project to improve the Lansdowne Bear Pit - near Bournemouth Railway Station - has been shortlisted for an award recognising planning excellence.

Running for 40 years, the awards run by the Royal Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI), celebrate exceptional examples of planning and the contribution planners make to society.

The Bournemouth Council project has been shortlisted for the wellbeing category for its efforts to make the below ground pedestrian and cycle paths at the roundabout near the Travel Interchange safer and more attractive.

This has included the introduction of the pop-up café FR8 - which was built from an old shipping freight container and installed in the central pedestrianised area of the roundabout which links Holdenhurst Road to St Swithun's Road and St Paul's Road.

The central part of the roundabout and underpass was also revamped last year thanks to local artist Rick Walker. His designs included bright coloured panels which direct people to key landmarks across the town.

And last summer new lighting was installed in the underpass in an effort to make this location vibrant and more attractive for those working, studying and travelling through Lansdowne and the surrounding areas.

Bournemouth councillor David Smith said: "I know the improvements, and especially the presence of the cafe, has really improved the area and made it a nicer place to for people to walk through and also spend time.

"It's great that these improvements have been recognised."

David Lowin, RTPI South West chairman, said: “The shortlist reflects the hard work and dedication put into the projects and recognises the positive impact planning has on the area. As a finalist they are getting the national and international recognition they deserve.”

Bournemouth Council has to wait until June 15 this year to see if they are named the winners at an awards ceremony in London.
