THE family of a teenage boy who loved sport and music have set up a charitable trust in his honour after he died of an asthma attack just over a year ago.

Ed Kent, who attended Lytchett Minster School pupil died on November 14, 2015 at the age of 13.

Today - which would have been Ed's 15th birthday - his parents Paula and Andy and sister Becky have launched the Ed Kent Charitable Foundation.

The aim of the foundation is to support youngsters in Dorset who have a passion for cricket or percussion.

The family also want to provide equipment for cricket clubs and schools in both these areas.

Ed's mum Paula said: "We are focusing particularly on cricket and percussion as these were Ed’s real passions and we are looking to help young people who have already demonstrated a commitment to sport and music."

"Ed played for the South Dorset District Cricket team for four years and loved everything about the game."

As well as watching several matches live Ed also got the chance to be a flag-bearer for an England v South Africa one day international match at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

According to Paula he was sport mad and particularly enjoyed football, swimming and trampolining as well as watching all kinds of sporting events on TV.

But sport wasn't his only passion he also loved music and was a keen drummer and was preparing to perform with the church youth band and was also planning to take music at GCSE as one of his subjects.

According to Paula, Andy and Becky, they wanted the trust to support those hobbies he loved the most.

And despite it being a difficult anniversary for the family today they say they are looking forward to an evening of fun to kick-start fundraising for the foundation.

"As a family, we have found that setting up a trust in Ed’s memory enables us to help other young people, as well as providing a long-term legacy for Ed," said Paula.

"We have also found it to be a helpful step in our own grief journeys, as all our thoughts of Ed in the 14 months since he died have focused on the past. "Of course, there have been no new memories with him. However, in setting up the trust, we have felt that he is travelling with us again."

Today's launch will be a private affair for close friends and family.
