PLANS have been unveiled for a new Jaguar garage at the site where an Asda supermarket was due to be built in Christchurch.

The application from Westover would see a new aftersales facility developed and the existing Land Rover garage on Bailey Drive, refurbished.

The aftersales facility would be built at the rear of the retail park, the site of a previous proposal for a major supermarket.

The scheme for the site off Barrack Road has been submitted to planners at Christchurch Borough Council.

And a statement included with the plans from Westover Group says the dealership will "make better use of the Bailey Drive road frontage by providing a clear customer arrival entry and greater transparency into the showroom."

The whole site layout will be redeveloped in order to provide "a more logical and efficient layout", including clear customer routes and parking areas.

The proposed new Jaguar Land Rover dealership would see an 18 car showroom at Bailey Drive, with the vehicles displayed on the ground floor between the two brands.

A mezzanine floor would provide staff areas.

The aftersales workshop, by the River Stour and at the rear of Bailey Retail Park, will include a vehicle compound, service centre and valet bay.

There will also be 27 work bays with offices and staff facilities. This site will be for staff only as customers would drop their vehicles at the showroom.

As previously mentioned, the site at Bailey Drive, was previously destined to be turned into a new Asda food store.

Developers Quantum put the site up for sale just two years after officially getting planning permission for the food store.

The land, once used an MoD testing facility and the site where the famous Bailey Bridge was designed and built, has extensive river frontage.

A spokesperson for Westover politely declined to comment on the application at this stage.
