POOLE secondary schools are among the top performing in the country, the latest league tables have revealed.

The revamped league tables are now ranking schools based on the progress made by their pupils, rather than achievement, with many having predicted a shake-up in the placings.

The main performance indicator this year is Progress 8, which monitors the progress made in eight subjects between the end of primary school and GCSEs.

The subjects include English and maths, as well as other English Baccalaureate subjects such as science.

Schools will be deemed successful and will be exempt from routine Ofsted inspections for a year if they have scored +1.0 or more, indicating pupils have made an average one grade more progress than the national average.

Those with a score of -0.5 or lower will be under the floor standard and will be subject to close monitoring.

This year, Poole’s results once again place it higher than both Dorset and Bournemouth, with a Progress 8 measure of 0.04. Bournemouth’s score is -0.01, and Dorset’s is -0.04.

The schools with the highest Progress 8 measures in the county are Glenmoor Academy, Bournemouth School for Girls, Parkstone Grammar School, Magna Academy, and The Swanage School.

Carole Aspden, service director for children and young people’s services at Bournemouth council, said: “We are delighted that Bournemouth schools have performed well and the majority achieved a Progress 8 score above the national benchmark. Similarly, most of the Bournemouth schools continue to have good GCSE English and math passes (grades A*-C) above the national benchmark. This is a testament to the continuing high quality of education in Bournemouth.”

Underperforming schools include St Aldhelm’s Academy, which has a Progress 8 measure of -0.51, and Parkfield School, with a measure of -0.52.

Progress 8 measures were not available for some schools which performed highly last year, such as Talbot Heath.
