RECOGNISE this picture? Chances are, if you aren’t from Dorset, then no, you don’t.

The county’s beautiful scenery is one of the many things that makes it a great place to live.

But according to a new survey, 85 per cent of people failed to recognise the unique coastline as even being in this country.

A survey asked people around the country to identify where some of the UK’s most recognisable spots were.

However, it turned out that people thought the Jurassic Coast was more Mediterranean than Dorset.

More than quarter of the people who didn’t know the picture was in the UK guessed it was in Greece.

It wasn’t all bad news though, with many people in the survey saying they were planning to holiday in the UK this year, giving a boost to the tourism industry.

The researchers, working for Hampton by Hilton Hotels, interviewed 2,000 people and asked them where they thought the landmarks were.

This included people in Southampton, where 80 per cent were unable to identify the Jurassic Coast as being in the UK.

Jason Davies, general manager at Hampton by Hilton Bournemouth, said: “We are lucky to be situated in such a stunning location and welcome visitors from across the UK every year.

“My recommendation to many guests is to take a ride on the open top bus from the centre of Bournemouth direct to the Jurassic Coast, taking them through beautiful Sandbanks and across on the chain ferry.”

Of the rest of the people surveyed, 21 per cent guessed the picture was taken in Cyprus, 15 per cent guessed Malta, 11 per cent guessed Portugal, nine per cent guessed Spain and three per cent guessed other.

This meant just 15 per cent of people identified that the photo was taken in Dorset.

The hotel brand is trying to encourage travellers to seek out new weekend travel experiences around the UK, including heading to see the beauty of the Dorset coast. The research also indicated a boost for UK tourist destinations, with 64 percent of people asked in the survey saying that they plan to take as many or more UK holidays as they had done previously. People said they were planning to go on holiday in the UK to explore new areas, due to value for money and the reduced travel time.
