AN INSPIRATIONAL mum-of-three who has documented her family’s battle with cancer has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Kerry Brown and her 10-year-old son Felix moved thousands to tears when they both launched blogs to come to terms with Felix's diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Now Kerry’s blog Mrs Brown's Blogs has been nominated for the lifestyle category of the UK Blogs Awards 2017 and now it is open to a public vote.

The teacher, from Moordown in Bournemouth, said: “I am so proud to be nominated. It would be so amazing to see a blog about childhood cancer, something which is rarely talked about but often feared, launched into the media limelight.

"When Felix was diagnosed, the only reference point I had at the time was images of children on the front of charity leaflets and campaigns. I hope that my blog gives a frank, honest and personal insight into what it means for a family to have a child who is diagnosed with cancer.

“The response I have had to the blogs have been so supportive and encouraging but it is also lovely to know that people have found strength and inspiration in them.”

Kerry described how her life turned upside down following her son’s diagnosis in January following a routine blood test. Their battle against the disease has led to her leaving her job as a teacher at Bourne Academy to launch her own business, which provides a range of educational services for families schools and businesses.

She explained: “Felix is doing amazing. He is recovering well from the intense stage of treatment and is now enjoying more normality now he is in maintenance. He still has to take a daily concoction of chemotherapy tablets and have weekly blood tests but he is attending school full-time and most importantly, playing regularly for Poppies U11s again.

“Whilst everything has returned to normality, we have had to make some adjustments because of Felix’s diagnosis. Due to the impact of Felix's treatment and his continued risk of infection, we decided that I would not return to full -time teaching as we needed more flexibility for appointments and occasions when Felix may not be well enough for school.”

Kerry said her business Go Fish Education, which offers tutoring and growth mindset workshops to help people realise and fulfil their potential, is inspired by Felix’s positive approach to his cancer battle.

She added: “It has been so important for Felix, Talia and Rufus to see me working again as this really is a sign that things are getting back to normal again. Life has changed so much in the last 12 months but at this moment, at this time, life is good!”
