THE Daily Echo’s new book on the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is proving a huge hit.

The 160-page hardback, featuring lots more images, is called Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, From 1893 to the World.

The book tells the story of the BSO with the help of an astounding collection of photographs from throughout its history, drawing on both the Daily Echo’s archive and that of the orchestra itself.

It begins with the founding of the Bournemouth Municipal Band by Dan Godfrey in 1893.

In the early days, Bournemouth welcomed such distinguished visitors as Holst, Sibelius and Walton as the Orchestra’s reputation grew.

And the publication is right up to date with stunning images of the 2016 Proms in the Park, which features on the cover.

There is a foreword by chief conductor Kirill Karabits who described the book as “a fantastic achievement”.

Dougie Scarfe, the BSO's chief executive said: “It has many incredible pictures and is a great account of this wonderful orchestra. I think our supporters will love it.”

Editor and head of news at the Daily Echo Andy Martin said: “The BSO is an incredible institution which has been an integral part of the cultural life of the area since 1893.

"We are very, very proud to have had a very long association with the BSO, as I have discovered looking at our archives going back 100 years.

“We are absolutely delighted to have published what will be a fantastic account of the life and times of the BSO.”

Chief conductor, Kirill Karabits, is signing copies of the book after the BSO next concert on Wednesday at the Lighthouse.

The book costs £14.95 and is available from the Echo, the BSO and a number of stockists.
