PLANS for Bournemouth’s former Bath Travel store to be turned into a ‘sourdough and craft beer mecca’ may have hit the buffers.

Work has started to convert the building into a restaurant - but it is currently being advertised ‘to let’ on Ellis and Partners website, despite the restaurant chain Base + Barley being granted a licence.

Plans to convert the former travel agent into a restaurant were approved last summer, with no suggestion who the occupant would be.

Base + Barley, who also have restaurants in Exeter and Cardiff, were granted a licence for the premises in May. They have social media accounts for Base + Barley Bournemouth, and it has been listed as 'coming soon' on their website since the spring.

But yesterday, a spokesperson for the chain said they were ‘still 50/50’ over their plans for the unit. The restaurant chain's website was also labelled as 'account suspended' yesterday.

The spokesperson said the managers were on another site and was unable to provide any further information.

Base + Barley boast their sourdough pizza dough is left to rise for 24 hours and 'so soft you could sleep on it', served alongside beer 'hand-brewed in small batches by local yeast gods who love their barley and hops like their own mother.'

And they add: 'It only takes 90 seconds for our 485°C wood fired oven to cook the finest grade 00 sourdough pizzas crafted by our pizza gods, meaning you’ll be tucking in to the finest pizza this side of Napoli in no time.'

The Daily Echo has contacted Ellis and Partners for further comment.
