PLANS for a karting track near Bournemouth Airport are set to be approved - despite objections from nearly 100 residents and businesses.

The scheme to move the karting circuit from Matchams Leisure Park in Matchams Lane to the new site at Chapel Gate, will go before councillors at Christchurch council on Thursday.

It has been recommended for approval after it was deferred from a previous committee meeting.

The site, described as undeveloped grassland, was previously used for car boot sales.

Objections have come from Portfield School, West Parley Parish Council, Bournemouth Sports Club, Bournemouth Airport, and Hurn and West Parley parish councils.

Concerns range from noise and disturbance, the adverse impact on the Green Belt and nearby school, loss of parking and the rise in traffic from the attraction.

An officers report to the planning committee says the kart track would not be readily visible from outside the site in terms of the public highway.

A 2.5metre high bund to the north of the track would provide screening and reduce the visual impact, the report says.

And the leisure attraction would add to the diversity of recreation and leisure uses in the area, it adds.

"The applicant has advised that the business specialises in corporate activity and operates in conjunction with local companies who offer 'package' events and there are obvious benefits to the local economy, in this regard."

An initial objection from the council's environmental health officers led to the scheme being amended, and it now meets their requirements.

They have called for a noise management scheme to be put in place over the types of karts used, controls over maintenance and repairs, PA systems and a complaint register.

A total of 19 conditions have been placed on the application including restrictions on operating hours, the number of karts on the track not exceeding 15 and stipulations on the lighting to avoid overspill.
